The Dangers of DIY Clear Aligners

Article by Remarkable Smiles

DIY projects are often a badge of honor for people who love learning new things and seeking a sense of accomplishment by doing things on their own. One area in which DIY projects can be dangerous and risky is orthodontics. Moving teeth using orthodontic devices like braces is an inherently risky procedure, and despite the popularity of DIY clear aligners, they can lead to lasting dental damage without proper supervision.

Clear aligners from brands such as Invisalign are popular for their “invisible,” aesthetically-pleasing appearance and ease of removal for eating and brushing teeth. DIY clear aligners have replicated these benefits while touting a new one: the ability to create a mold of your teeth on your own and have mail-order aligners made based on the mold.

On paper, this proposition sounds appealing. The process appears quick, easy, and hassle-free. However, there is a reason why professional organizations such as the American Association of Orthodontics and the American Dental Association have opposed this practice. There are documented instances of worsened tooth misalignments, lost teeth, and jaw injuries caused by DIY clear aligners.

Without a licensed dentist or orthodontist’s supervision, DIY clear aligners can be more of a hindrance than a useful tool to achieve a perfect smile. Dentists and orthodontists are trained to move teeth safely, using the tools most appropriate for every patient’s situation. Just as you wouldn’t trust an untrained person to perform surgery or any other medical procedure, you shouldn’t make yourself responsible for your teeth’s health.
